You need 3 azo dyes consisting of a Cyan a Magenta and a Yellow. You need up to 6 emulsions or maybe 9 to make up the light sensitive portion and you need at least 6 - 9 layers bo be coated on the support. A suitable support would be YUPO. It is sold in sheets and rolls.

outside of sheets and rolls, can one locate the dyes in liquid form? PE, do you know of any manufactures of the raw chemicals?

Standard Azo dyes from any manufacturer are usable as long as they can be easily mordanted into the gelatin coating. The real criterion for any dye is the hue. Is it a good cyan, magenta and yellow set and then secondly, is the dye stabiity good.

So 3 things. Water soluable and mordantable, good hue and good stability.

Other than that, most any azo dye will work.

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I did find this very long webpage about Ilfochrome microfilm. I don't know how similar it is to the paper version, but somewhere on that page it does have a diagram of what layers there are and their order.

Hope this helps!

17 layers, 2 machine passes and a drying profile like you have never seen...

If you can coat it, and it works, you deserve a Nobel prize.

Good Luck!

Simon;

Considering the problems that Agfa had coating the original Sulfonic Acid based couplers, and their conversion to oil based couplers, I am really surprised that Ilfochrome was able to coat using a slide or curtain coater. I have tried that and had my successes and failures. The failures were spectacular requiring me to work with the coaters cleaning the coating machine.

The viscosity problems were huge when doing multi-layer coatings. I wish them the best.

Thinking about this overnight, I have to mention that we did hand coat and machine coat several dye bleach experiments while I was working on this type of system. We managed to make a 3 color coating with up to 5 layers that was thermally processed in a 2 step heat treatment. I am attempting to duplicate this here using simple azo dyes, but getting the dye bleach catalyst is rather difficult at this time.
