Electronic flash for stereo realist

i have been using a Vivitar 283 on my Realist and it works great. My worry is the flash and then the hot shoe adapter is a lot of weight and stress on the hot shoe. I would appreciate any suggestions for something smaller.

Use the flash off the camera directly, for instance on a flash-rail mounted under the camera.
