Is he running the film through twice?

Yes, and it requires diligent note keeping, often multiple bodies or backs.

I am currently doing a project that is similar in execution that is to benefit the local animal shelter, it is a playful excercise in bringing a lyrical visual narrative to the idea of how and what dogs dream about.

The goal is to first exposure two 12 exposure backs on the same 12 subjects as backgrounds creating two sets of the same dreams. Then I take the two backs and double expose the dogs in. The notes are photos made on my phone for reference. The end product will be the best 6-8 scenes to be printed in the darkroom then sold at auction with 100% of the proceeds going to the shelter.

The combination of using the visual notes and some purpose built tools for in camera masking and exposure controls increases the chances of successful imagery. I have done this successfully before on another long term project and quite like the results.

Thanks for explaining. I was curious aswell how the process is done for the double exposures. BTW, that animal shelter project you’re doing sounds awesome!
