I have a book titled `Edwin Smith, Photographs 1935-1971` (Published By Thames & Hudson). I Googled for information about him today and I believe that lovers of B&W landscape and architecture would thoroughly enjoy the work of this excellent photographer who deserves to be better known.

Smith was a wonderful photographer who, as you say deserves to be better appreciated. If you like that book you have try to get hold of "Evocations of Place" a book of smiths photographs published last year with excellent text by Robert Elwall.

I suspect that many of the images that are in the book that you`ve mentioned are in the book that I already have. The cover photo of "Evocations Of Place" is image number 185 in mine and is titled as: "Satyr looking down on the terrace".
It might be almost the same book apart from the title, although I will look out for it.

I think that evocations of palce was featured in B & W photography when it was published with an excerpt from the book and some pictures
here is a review from the telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/08/18/nosplit/basmith118.xml

Although there are a fair nunber of pictures in both books I have both and think Evocations is well worth getting A very good selection intersting writing and better reproductions

Either way Smith was a great photographer and very much underrated

Yes Evocations of Place is a wonderful book. I *think* I did see a review in B&W.

Does anyone know if his archive is visitable?

The Royal Institute of British Architects has Smith's archive and just under 1000 of his pictures can be seen at http://www.ribapix.com just go to the advanced search and find Edwin Smith in the list of artists and search. There are plenty of other interesting photographs as well If you are interested in architectural photography be prepared to spend quite a bit of time there!

another good source of information is http://www.weepingash.co.uk/es/es01.html

Richard
