Window or available outdoor light, I think, in general. Bear in mind that he made some very long exposures (sometimes 8 hours), and the light could change over time.
Yep. Natural. When you think about it, many of the images we see from that period were taken under conditions we would consider less than ideal now. Making them all the more amazing.
