Edward Weston Exhibition - Poole, Dorset

Anyone else living down in the SouthWest will be excited to know that we've got a real live proper exhibition in the area!

Poole Lighthouse have an Edward Weston exhibition for the next few weeks (until the 19th Oct 05). I haven't been over there yet, but will definatly be making a visit (admission is free).

Excellent news - thanks for the info Ian. I'll definitely be popping down the M3 etc for that! Lots of photo opportunities in the area too (weather permitting!).

Edward Weston: From the Arts Council Collection

Edward Weston was one of America’s greatest and most original photographers. His portraits, nudes, landscapes and still lifes were created with a sharp focus and great depth of field, presenting their subjects with an extraordinary clarity and level of detail.

This touring exhibition reflects the range of Edward Weston’s work between 1920 and 1943. The 24 prints include some of his most famous images such as the ‘pear-like’ nude, which Weston considered one of his most perfect photographs.

P.P.S. I sent them an email about the IE only site... interesting to see if (a) they ignore me; (b) they get all defensive; (c) apologise profusely and promise to sack their web designer, offer me the job and send a few hundred quid in compensation...

I'm not holding my breath for (c).

Pity the Crown Monochrome guys can't organise for the exhibition to brought over for a special one day show for all those attending on the 15th October.

OT. For those who, like me, surf and view in Firefox, there's a handy extension available called 'IE View' which adds a 'View Page in IE' option to the content and link context menu in Firefox. It is available from the Mozilla Updates pages.

Looks like a good exhibition, if anyone visits let us know what it was like.

Got a reply back from the Lighthouse:

The exhibition is open whenever the building is open which very generally means between 10am and 9pm every day excluding Sundays.

I made the journey to the Lighthouse today and enjoyed the exhibition. There are 24 Silver Bromide prints made by Cole Weston which are part of the National Touring exhibitions based from the Hayward Gallery Collection. Nearly all are 10x8 ish, one being smaller and a larger one being by Cole of Edward.

The show runs until 19th November, not Oct as Ian originally thought.

Entrance is free and the gallery is on the ground floor next to the cafe. I was the only one there showing any interest in the pictures, but the comments book had seen a fair amount of people enthusing and asking for more photography, especially by the masters, to be exhibited at the Lighthouse.

There were a few stand out prints and some which I felt weren't so strong or to my taste.

The journey into Poole is frequently fraught and tedious. Today being no exception. However if you are local or are in the area, it is a show worth seeing. If you live further afield, it might be worth ringing the Lighthouse, to see where the exhibition is off to next.

I finally got there today too (yep Oct 19th was a typo by me - you've got another month). We were the only people in there, but the comment book did include lots of positive (specifically pro-analouge) stuff in addition to the inane.

A few that really stood out, and a lot that were OK. The mexican shop front image (forget the full details) was probably the favourite among the group I was with. The eggs (now a cliche due to westons work) are pretty stunning, and one shot of a tree manages to hold impossible detail over what must have been a huge dynamic range.

If you do go, and want to get a catalouge (pretty good value at £4), then they're under the till in the sweet shop - the info desk were pretty clueless and had no idea what we were talking about.

Thanks for the info Ian and Baxter. I really want to see some of Weston's prints and to see some Azo contact prints in real life.

Mrs B and I organized a trip to London for a couple of days in the summer and one thing that was on the agenda was the Weston exhibition at The Atlas Gallery. When we got there it was shut with a tatty hand written note on the door saying it was shut due to sickness and would be open in the afternoon. We sat in the pub opposite until 2.30 but had to leave because of other things planned.

Good job for The Atlas Gallery I didn't know at that time they had 'Windowsill Daydreaming' by Minor White, my favourite image of all time, as I may have broken in.
