Why do Ilford 35mm films have a sort of bar code on one edge and the Kodak films not?

Just something I have been wondering for a while!
Matt

Not an answer, only an additional question, actually... Sorry about that

Do all Ilford 35 mm films have this bar code? Maybe it's because I've been using meterware for a long time, but I'm not sure FP4+ and HP5+ have this bar code.

I'm sure the Delta films have it, though.

My first guess would be: so that printing machines "know" which frames to print, when ordering specific prints from negatives? FWIW, every colour film I have seen has it.

Dear Matt,

The 'bar code' is for automatic detection of frame numbers in suitably equipped photo finishing equipment : The 4 digit code is there so as we
identify from which parent roll that actual film slitting is from for QC
purposes.

There has been a bar code on Kodak motion picture films for quite some time.

Dear Matt,

No it does not, many of the most modern machines do not need them, perhaps ours may be a bit more user freindly on some machines.
