I'm thinking about unloading stuff on ebay that I have not been able to sell here.

Question - as I am setting up my seller's account, it is asking for my bank account #. I don't want to give that.
I want to be paid via paypal, so want to give that instead. Am I mis-understanding and ebay asking for my bank Account # allows me to enter my paypal account #?
I have not clicked through yet..

Thanks!

eBay recently switched to paying directly. I do not think they will pay out through Paypal anymore.

It was a long time ago when I setup my eBay account, but IIRC the reason they want a bank account number from you is for collecting seller fees from you. I setup a separate account at my bank that was used only for eBay transactions. Never had any issues. Btw, the costs of selling through eBay are quite steep nowadays, IMO.

Exactly.

I'm just leery for the moment when they get hacked, and then my checking account info is out there..
Then again, paypal also has my checking acct info..

Anyway, thanks for the confirmation. It's been a long time since I've sold on there. And yeah their fees are high, which is why I'll price my stuff high. Don't need to sell it, but if it does, great.

I moved to Sacramento to be w/ my gf during Covid, moved all this junk w me, but will be back in LA next week. Kinda don't want to drag this stuff down w me, but one thing for sure is the craigslist audience in LA is flippin huge.
Sold thru them so many times, so I think I will bring some down w me.

I've been selling on eBay since it first started back in '97.
They recently forced all sellers to switch to their "managed payment system" whereby eBay gets the money paid for your sales and passes it on to you when and if they feel like it minus about 20%.
They won't let you set up a new account any other way. If you already had an account before this started they will let you continue but you won't be able to add new items or edit existing listings.

I suggest setting up a new bank account just for your eBay sales and register with eBay using that account.

Been selling on eBay since Nov-1999. Never an issue - except a couple of non-paying buyers. No-biggie.

HOWEVER, when eBay recently changed its policy regarding how sellers get paid (and dramatically raised the fees eBay collects), I quit. There's just no F'ing way in hell I'm giving eBay my banking info or social security number. Way better off selling here at lower prices.

First, your checking info is printed on every check you write. It's not exactly a secret.

Second, both PayPal and eBay historically have had a pretty good security record. The only issue I have with both of them is that there's no way to block them out, i.e. a fraudulent buyer can request money back for no reason and there's nothing you can do to stop them from taking the money from your bank.

And finally, it's much easier to control this on a banking side.
Just get a separate checking account without overdraft protection. Strictly for trading.

First: There's is a difference between the account number on the bottom of the check and out a server connected to the internet. If I write a check, maybe, a handfull of people have access to it. Nobody in Belarus or China will likely ever see it or have access to it.

Second: PayPal has a very good security. eBay...not so much.

eBay switched to this no alternative pay system which has lots of issues before. Just like eBay this payment system has no real customer service, but dummy AI. It is dirt cheap payment system by all means. Uber eats is using at and money gets stolen constantly. The only way to get it resolved is to contact your CC via phone.
I just can't accept to be handled as dirt bag. It is 2021 and providing no alternative payment methods is act of duchebags. Of course, I not going to give them my bank account access, since they are using only one, compromised payment system.

No way will I give eBay direct access to by checking account. They need me much more than I need them.

Due to their move away from Paypal, if I was going to do any amount of selling I'd open a bank account specifically for eBay, and keep only a little money in it. Beware the 'Good Until Cancelled' listings! I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating, the ads WILL end, and you WILL pay eBay another fee for the luxury of them relisting it automatically for you. I got caught out on that, and now I keep an eye on things and end them before they naturally end. Small PITA, but better than them tacking on yet another fee to my auctions.

eBay is really a $#**&% company. Just terrible, unethical people running that place. No ethics at all, it's all about their money.

Kinda now wanting to cancel my ebay listings.. just two so far and I have not given them my acct info.

I much prefer to sell here and on other sites, but things have slowed down a bit in interest.

I'll offer the alternate interpretation. Charging a listing fee may keep some of the clowns from listing things at absurd prices, month after month. As an example, the dipwad with the $100 Fuji film (see the previous post).

eBay is still the best way that I know of to convert smaller, ship-able items into cash. I have paid thousands of dollars in eBay fees over the years, and that's remarkable because I wouldn't have thought my household clutter was so valuable. Sometimes I get sort of hosed (tube amp just sold for maybe 60% of what I had hoped to get) but usually I don't, and occasionally, I do far better than expected. Lately I've just been letting "the market" decide on value by offering low opening bid prices and no reserve, but whether that's the best strategy, I don't know.

I've never really figured out why some items do so well, and others fall flat: Sheer luck of offering the right item to the right person at the right time, I suppose.

Well, I just posed that Minolta that I am also selling here, on ebay. It sold next to immediately, for $20 more than I was asking here, w the ebay fees already taken into account.

Hmm, guess I will be using ebay. The one advantage that ebay has is basically you don't deal w tyre kickers. I've had so many people on regular classified (here, other sites, craigslist etc) where people just send questions, ask about the weather, what's for dinner.... but no sale.

To be fair, it is great when you sell 'locally', but sometimes that is not possible.

I've been buying and selling on Ebay since 1997, with good success. But recently they have changed their policies, and I've had my first bad experience with them.
I'm now looking for alternatives.

Not easily explained. But since my last post I looked up "Ebay Class Action Lawsuit" and discovered there are many. I had not traded on Ebay since their change of policy and had no idea how payments were made etc. Previously all my transactions involved Paypal, which is now eliminated as a possibility. As a result, I did not understand how I was being paid for two sales I made. This led to a dispute with the buyer. I quickly asked Ebay to refund the buyer's money, which they apparently did. But somehow this has resulted in Ebay claiming a $500 fee from me, which they took directly from my bank account! I am arguing this with them but I doubt that I will have any success. I will probably join a lawsuit. Unfortunately, I don't know how I will now be able to sell excess equipment as they seem to have a lock on the market.

What's your eBay ID? I'd hate to miss out on anything good!

I have a separate bank account set up for ebay transactions only.
Doesn't cost anything to do this. Once I'm satisfied a buyer won't ask for a return or a refund, I move the money into a checking account.
My only gripe about the new ebay system is I'm being billed separately for shipping costs rather than it being factored into my net.
Ebay takes their cut off the top now and several days before they send my money. Paypal was always next day service.
