On October 3, 2022, the American Chemical Society designated Kodak-Rochester as a National Historic Chemical Landmark for its contribution to consumer photography. There are 90 such landmarks in the USA. As Dr. Terry Taber, Kodak CTO and my former colleague, pointed out during the ceremony this is an honor to all Kodak workers Worldwide.

that contributed through the decades.

In conjunction with this event I was honored to have presented a paper at the American Chemical Society North East Regional Meeting in Rochester. My presentation was based on my book “Making KODAK Film”.

To my understanding this is "just" a designation given by a private association.

Or is veiling behind that "national" any legal protection of the remaining buildings or even public funding for respective care or educational effort?
(I ask as over here "national" typically is related to state intervention.)

They hold a congressional charter. Which roughly means:
The relationship between Congress and an organization so recognized is largely symbolic, and is intended to lend the organization the legitimacy of being officially sanctioned by the U.S. government. Congress does not oversee or supervise organizations it has so chartered, aside from receiving a yearly financial statement.

The divide between government and private is not always clear in the US, nor is there distinct aspirations to have it be that way.

Not that it’s much different in the EU. But here it’s probably more hidden from the public eye though.

Your first thought on this is correct. The ACS is a private organization that has no authority over real estate development. This is just a part of the ACS portfolio of educational activities aimed at the general public.

This is a recognition of something considered to be important, by an organization considered to be authoritative.

What a great thing to do. So much history and innovation happened there. I worked for a subsidiary company of Kodak for a few years. Fond memories of many trips to Kodak Park and lunches at Bathtub Billy's. Such great and friendly folks there. They deserve the recognition. Congratulations

Thanks for the kind comments. It was a great place to work with a supportive culture that was passed from generation-to-generation. I only wish that PE could have attended.
