I just saw this on the French newspaper Le Figaro website. Pardon my own personal translation which follows!

A Leica camera manufactured in 1923 was sold Saturday at auction in Vienna for the record price of 1.32 million Euros, surprising everyone by becoming the most expensive camera in the world. Its value had been estimated at between Euro 350,000 and 450,000 prior to the auction. The purchaser was a private collector from Asia (literally, of Asian origin) who wishes to remain anonymous, reported the highly respected Vienna gallery Westlicht where the auction organized the auction. This Leica was one of a series of 25 prototypes built in 1923, two years before the commercialization of this famous German brand. Sent to New York to be patented, it was the first Leica to be exported. The previous record price for a camera was set last year by a precursor to photography (sic), an original daguerreotype camera dating to 1839 and bearing the rare signature of its inventor Frenchman Jacques Daguerre (1787-1851) according to the Westlicht gallery. That camera was valued at Euros 732,000.

To think that there are at least 2 people out there willing and able to spend that kind of money on a rare camera. Amazing.

Still cheaper than the most expensive photograph, though.
