I have been reading on the Web that the Durst S45 and 138 are the same enlarger with different condenser lenses. Does anyone know if the s45 can handle 5x7 negatives?

I have had great success using an S45EM with 5x7 negatives. It appears to be the EXACT same enlarger- just fitted with a point light source. I replaced the point light source with an enlarger bulb for use with the condensers and I purchased a cold light that slides right into the condenser slots as well.

I don't think there is a carrier available for 5x7, but it looks like if you sandwiched the negative between glass it should work. I'll check it out when I'm near mine this weekend.

I use a Nega 138 (accepts 5x7) and it fits perfectly. I have a 138 operating manual I downloaded, and the enlarger is identical. Literally, the only difference I can discern is the point light bulb and the plate on the front of the head that shows condenser combinations for different size negatives. That plate shows the largest negative as 4x5, but I'm guessing that's because of the point light setup.

I believe that they truly are the same enlarger...the condensers are the same with the exception that you will need to pick up another 240 mm condenser for use as a 5X7 enlarger. Also you will need another enlarger lens as the 150 will not cover 5X7. The shortest lens that I have heard being used is a 180. I personally use a 240mm Companon S...a bit long for the use...as it will also cover 8X10
