Durst M800 With CLS 201 Durst Color Head

Hi everyone,

I recently started to use M800 Durst enlarger with a color head. This latter shows max M and Y value as 60.
Do you have an idea for such device what will be the corresponding M and Y values to align with 00 to 5 grade scale?

I know a little about Durst but have never heard of a colorhead than only goes to "60" most Durst heads use density units rather than CC values, I can only speculate that there is another filter in the light path somewhere than has a value of 50R. That said your easiest approach may be to but a set of above the lens Ilford filters and lay them in the filter drawer, you can still use the built in filters to tweak contrast between the half grade increments. If you want t use the color head you'll need to find a manual (I had no luck searching for one). You can also use a contact step wedge and make prints at various settings to determine approximate settings on the color head.

I've attached a document from the Ilford website that describes the contrast grades and their corresponding Durst colour filter values.

As DRM says, most colour heads will go higher than 60.....you may have to check the head is functioning correctly on the Y, M and C filters.

You can test and calibrate that yourself with the help of a densitometer; otherwise,use the info coming with the paperY max and M min always gives you the softest grade and Ymin and M max always gives you the hardest grade; grades from 0-5 should not be an issue. my L1200 colour head goes from softer than 0 to harder than 5!

Thank you Mike. Very useful doc. I'll see if I can use it as there is no reference to 800. But still...

its in french but page 4 says the mod 70 vario head goes up to 60. Maybe your head is specifically for black and white printing rather than colourheads which seem to go to 100, 130, or 170.

Hi serpico, I have recently bought a durst da900 which has the same cls 201 colour head. Did you ever find out the correct M and y settings to align with 00 to 5 grade.

If you want more contrast in your print, increase the M (only). If 0-M and 0-Y are too much contrast, start dialing in Y. The absolute dial numbers are a waste of time, as Durst used a different numerical scale than most others, and over the years, the maximum density of their colorheads also changed. Mixing M and Y to try to maintain a consistent exposure time as you change contrast settings is possible, but largely a waste of time unless you have a color enlarging exposure meter to measure net illumination from setting to setting.
