Durst M601 80mm lens requirements

Just go one of these enlargers. Since it came with a 50mm lens with a recessed board, I am set up for 35mm printing. I keep reading that I need a flat board for an 80mm lens to print MF. Is that correct? Is it impossible to print MF with the 50mm, but just lesser enlargements. Can I not just screw the 80mm in to the Recessed board? If I did, what would be the negative impact (i.e. resrtiction on printing size due to light fall off?) Since the recess is 18mm deep..I am guessing I would lose whatever enlarging capability comes from losing 18mm of height?

I have all the required condensers for both MF and 35mm.

Sorry for so many questions, but I am concerened that if I need the flat board, I may not find one on the second hand market.

No the 50mm doesn't cover 6x6. So rather more than fall off.

You would have focus difficulties using an 80mm lens on the recessed board.

Thanks Ian, What do you mean by focus difficulties...at big enlargements? I could restrict the enlargements size initially until I find a suitable board..Rgds, Kal

Just found this on photo.net from a post in 2000....is this a correct statement? If so, I could live with the additional 18mm restriction...particularly if it is for the smaller enlargements..alternatively, can anyone give advice (aside from e-bay) where I might be able to find the relevant lens board?

"With an 80 mm lens it's not a problem which board you use, although I suppose you are slightly limited in the smallest picture you could make because you can't move the lens quite as far away from the negative as you could with a flat board."

It's smaller enlargements that will be more difficult as that's when the lens is furthest from the film.

i have and use a durst m601 for 35mm and 6x6, 8mm, 110 + other enlargements.
i use the recessed board for both my 50mm lenses and 90mm.
i've never had problems with the 90mm, even though the board is recessed.
the 50 i have will cover larger film but the head is raised so high above
the paper it is pretty much worthless.

it is a great little enlarger, although
the anti-newton glass is wicked-expensive
( the last time i bought it was in 1996 ).
i love turning the enlarger head
to project on the wall or the floor: lots-O-fun

Thanks John. My neg holder is glassless. There seems to be a claer (removable) square peace of glass in the filter draw...i assume to protect from the heat of the condensers? Do you recommend the glass for the neg holder?..seems from posts I have seen, it created more issues than solved...hens the anti-newton glass etc.

I have a 601 with 2 heads, color and condenser, a 80mm or a 75 will work with the recessed lens board, the clear glass in the filter drawer does asorb heat and keeps VC filters flat as well. I have the masking glass negative carrier 6X6 to 35mm and the 35mm glassless carrier, I found that the glass carrier produces a sharper print. Lens boards show up on ebay so if you want a flat board for your 80mm you ought to be able find one without much trouble.

if your 80mm lens thread is the same as your 50mm lens thread, then you may get away with using the recessed board. But if they are different sized threads, then you may just as well get a flat board for the 80mm lens. The flat board should give you the full range of enlargerment factors with 80mm lens.

There are also wide angle lenses so a rodagon WA 60 would cover your neg format and need less distance from the neg. Therefore it may work with the recessed board. However, short wide angle enlarger lenses are not so good on condenser systems. They work better on diffusion heads.

Thanks all. Bought a Siriopla 39..(where did Durst get these names?!!?) flat board which is apparently the plastic version of the Lapla 39 original metal version...will see how it works out. Next step, an 80mm lens ;-)

I hope you haven't rushed into that. The Rodagons should fit that but the componons won't as far as I can tell.

You should get the lens first and then the correct lens panel for it unless you already decided on a rodagon or a lens with an M39 thread.

correction:
I just tried my componon-s 80 on my lapla 39 board and it fits. But schneider say its a Leica M25 thread. However, my rodenstock rodagon 50 which has an M39 thread, also fits.
So it looks like there are different notations for the same size thread. Confusing, or at least I am...

Rob, the Componons vary, the older ones were 25mm and need an adapter for Leica 39mm, the newer ones fit.

Scheneider don't seem to be very good at giving specs for their enlarger lenses. Their current pdf says either Leica M25 screw in thread or M43 with a mounting ring for a componon-s 80 neither of which is M39.
