I just bought a "Durst Coltim".

It seemed to me to be a 30min kitchen alarm clock, with as extra feature a phosphorescent dial and a start button.

But at closer inspection I realized that in contrast to a kitchen alarm clock, where the time on the dial runs down, with the Durst version it runs up.

Further inspection showed that by pushing the indicator knob the clock freezes, and on pushing the start button runs further.

But what use is the alarm (at interruption and at end of 30min) then? All those features in combination do not make sense to me.

Seemingly I'm slow on the intake again. Anyone relieve me?

(Have my Durst literature not at hand, and am too curious to postpone that issue...)

I just received the answer via PM:

On that dial one could/should mount clips (which are missing) on deliberate times. Having reached that point in time the clock stops with an alarm. Then, by pushing the start button the clock runs further until reaching the next clip.

By that one gained an alarm clock with several programmable alarms in succession, intentended to run a multi-step process. After the alarm sounded one could exchange baths or transport materials from tray to tray.

Found THIS in about 1/2 minute of Googling...
Photos, plus a short explanation. Interesting.

I googled too before, but got nothing like that...

If in need I shall make me some clips. Should not be a great problem.

At the moment I have electronic timers, each with several programs, in use. As well as a mechanical stop watch. But this Durst thing is more foolproof and has a nicer sound...

A system of several clocks for several processes will take up some space though and that clock has a only a 1minute resolution.

If one could take off the dial with the clips attached and substitute with another programmed dial, no much space would be needed for a range of programmes.

And yes, the dial is retractable and Durst offered dials and clips as accessories. (I meanwhile dived into my books and looked it up…)

Well, the original producer of this clock is Hauck (Minibell). It's a very handy clock when doing all kind of film/paper processing. I use it with my CPA-2. Yes, you need the small clips. I have an extra set of dial and clips so that you can simply exchange it without putting all clips in the right position again. So for two different type of processing already pre-programmed.

Actually the Durst Coltim has 1/2 minute resolution as you can put the clips in between the minutes.

I have one that came with a Durst FP-8 film processor. I find it not accurate enough for the developer step in color processes like C-41 or E-6, but good enough for the remaining steps.

Epilogue…

I forgot to say that due to the generosity of a dutch member who sent me some clips I have a perfectly working Coltim awaiting those tasks to come.

No. At least with my model, there are dividers on the backside of the scale placed at the half minute positions.

And 10 years after this thread was started, I am looking at these now. For what it's worth, here are original instructions, even if operation appears simple enough.

Is reliability of timings being questioned? Sure, not a time chip controlled device, but for cooking eggs to one's liking should do it. Programmed for different doneness, seems like a winner.
