Just a HEADS UP for anyone interested. There is Durst 8 x 10 enlarger for sale on Craigslist-Los Angeles. Has an Ilford 500 multicontrast head and a Schneider 5.6, 240 lens. Supposed to be in working condition. Asking says $1,500 OBO. I'm not involved, just a HEADS up only since I've not seen many offered for sale on the west coast.

I saw the ad, and if I had the cash I would be all over it.
Unfortunately $1,500 is more that I will ever have to spend at one time.

If that were in Atlanta...

That's the real problem with these things. They have become (relative to what they cost new anyway) much more reasonable (and yeah $1500 is still a lot though, not sure I'd spring for that even if it were next door) but shipping has not been displaced by "digital shipping" and rates never really came down after fuel costs drove them up so shipping has become prohibitive on large heavy items.

Gary,
I hear ya. For me it's more the room than the money. Of course if I had it, then I'd want an 8x10 camera and all that is needed with it.

8x10 cameras come up at fairly affordable prices pretty regularly. Only my lack of an 8x10 enlarger has held me back from getting one. X-ray film can make shooting 8x10 downright cheap though there are many subjects for which the spectral response won't be a good match, though plenty of others for which it will be fine. Learn on x-ray film, get some Arista/Foma or something for cases where it's not suitable, if you don't want to spring for Ilford. Kodak has priced themselves right out of the B&W sheet film market, IMO.

I exercised Google and found that it's being offered

by this place

and the phone number indicates it's at the 2121 N. San Fernando Road, Los Angeles location in Suite 3.

I could scrounge up the money, but have no place to put that beast. Contacting 8x10 negatives will have to do for me.

Now on eBay starting at 999$.
Look to me like a good deal with that rare head. Same as the Ilford 500 4x5 version but 4 300W lamps. You got it complete with the special power supply and keypad. This Ilford head was produced in 110V and 220V, not mentioned in the ads witch one it is. Also no description of the carrier, if it is a Nega 205 or a Grane Grahal, the deal is still more valuable.
This head is a big advantage if your ceiling is low. Durst 184 column height is about 91". I have 1" clearance in my basement and was able to lift up the enlarger in that space.
Durst 184 is not so large. It split like the Durst 138 and I managed to enter it in my car and 1 person help me to enter it in my basement.
Floor space is about 44" square.

Enlarger may have some millage but Ilford head, keypad and Power supply look not abused, some cosmetic tapes to be removed and cleaning needed.
The head is correctly mounted with the original Ilford adapter made for the Durst 184 so the match is perfect, not an homemade solution.
Knowing that the enlarger was operational and the owner can answer questions and take visit is also a good point. Maybe a still in use enlarger is better that one stored in the attic for 20 years and all rusted.
