Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

I'm going to be spending a fortnight there shortly, so I thought I'd ask the assembled audience if there are places round there that are must see photographic locations.

The wife has been stocking up on XP2 and Kodak colour C41 (Only 10 rolls of each ) to start with , and i've got a good selection of 120 so that should see us through the first week at least.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

I think D and G is one of the nicest areas of Scotland and, as yet, relatively unspoilt. I spent many a week walking and touring (motorbike and car) up there. Glen Trool is worth a visit and, if you're feeling fit enough, a climb up to the Merrick. Anywhere round Auchencairn (Balcarry bay, rascarral bay - all good photographically) . The route from New Galloway to Newton Stewart along the A712 is scenically good, especially near Clatteringshaws Loch. There are stacks of coastal roads as well. Don't forget to visit the Mull of Galloway. TBH, there are loads of places to visit. One of my favourites is the Gem Rock Museum at Creetown ( I wonder if it's still there?). Enjoy yourself!

Possibly a little bit cheeky .... but he seems a nice bloke, so I'd try e-mailing Philip Dunn at www.photoactive.co.uk for some information on places to see. He lives there and runs photocourses in that area.

Melrose and Jedburgh abbeys are not too far away. Well worth a visit. I liked Jedburgh better, even though it's less visited and less famous.

Lovely area but a must-do is taking some anti-Midge measures as the little blighters are like stuka bombers round there. :-0

I did the far north Highlands and islands about 10 years ago BC (Before Children), and the only things that kept the little buggers away (Midges not children) was a permenantly lit cigarette dangling from my lip. Not really an option these days since I gave up that particular vice a couple of years back.

Jungle formula? Ha they use it like aftershave!

Most shops in the area sell anti-midge cream including the Avon Cosmetics stuff that the Marines are issued with. Don't ask me which works though as I don't cross the border in the midge season. Enjoy the trip, and I hope the weather favors you.

Best thing is to come up to the Outer Hebrides then the little blighters don't get much of a chance in our ever present wind Having said that, the sun has been shining today while i was strolling round the 'Continental market' in The Town.
