So I used to shoot a fair amount of 16 and 35mm film, mostly for TV commercials. In response to competition from the RED and other video cameras, I had to come up with a solution. Not being able to afford a RED, I took a good look at the options, and rigged out a Canon 7d to shoot video with, and I have been shooting video for TV stations and commercials with it for about six months now. All kinds of learning curve later, and here I am. I started a group for those that might be interested.

Sounds good. I've joined the group. My business is primarily family portraits, but I've been shooting some commercial video on the 5DII. Despite their obvious limitations, DSLR's really have moved the quality of video capture along so fast. Just two years ago I was shooting a low budget feature on a JVC HD-200... With 35mm lens adaptor, lights and grip this thing weighed a ton and was easily 8 times the size of my DSLR package. Watching the film on the big screen two weeks ago, I was cursing the video noise and wishing for my 5D. - Ciaran
 
Thanks. I've been shooting some as well. I often shoot work-related events with a 5DmkII, and figured that if I'm there with this thing that does HD video, I should figure out how to use it, and maybe we could use the footage, and not only could we use it, but I've been getting other opportunities outside of work to shoot video. I'm still figuring it all out, but it's falling into place. Here's a trailer I did with one of my co-workers, who has a background in postproduction. I shot the footage of the musicians and the audience, and she edited--

I think she ended up using the sound off the camera, which was recorded with a Sennheiser shotgun mic, though we should have had access to the house sound, since we produced this series and tour.
 
Cool man. I started off the discussion area with a post about all the junk I did to make my camera workable.
 
I see this as a great opportunity...

to drop a ton of cash on all the supporting equipment and software needed to produce video in addition to my photo gear.

Once you see the HD video, you want to start fiddling with it to make it better.

Even my little lumix does pretty good video.

I'm waltzing along the edge of a slippery slope.
 
This is cool Jason! I've been having a blast shooting video with my little Lumix LX3 and playing with it in iMovie. Now I can watch the big boys play and learn a few things.

Thanks Jason, this could be very useful. I have started messing around with the video functions on my Olympus Pen E-P1 and find it very interesting. The quality seems okay and it is great to be able to shoot video with Olympus OM lenses.
 
Okay, so I just tried to join the group and it tells me I am a member, I guess, but I can't see any of the posts. Do I need to be approved by the Grand Poobah or something? Which I guess brings up a question for me, is there a reason that a group of this nature needs to be private?

Thanks Jason. By the way, that's ISO 6400 with an 85/1.4 wide open. The only light in that shot is reflected from the screen and a couple of blue-gelled music stand lights that were just so the musicians could see what they were doing.
 
I joined as well! I've been doing a lot of DSLR video work this past year and a half and I'm truly impressed with what these cameras can push out.
 
I've joined. I'm just fiddling with the video function on my Canon 7D and with a Sigma 18-270mm lens for family happyvids.
