I only found one reference to someone making dry plates using liquid emulsion, without hardener. Is anyone else doing so sucessfully? I hate to pay $10 shipping for a $4 product. Are there any on-the-cheap- DIY hardeners that I can stew up with stuff I already have (I dont have any formaldehyde or glutaldehyde or whatever laying around either)

You might want to look into alt-photo mailing list archive. I've tried several hardeners and found that glutaraldehyde is probably the best hardener if good ventilation is available in your darkroom to manage small amount of fume.

Other agents are more difficult to obtain. If you can buy acid buffered glut for $14, I'd think that's the easiest and cheapest solution you can find.
