dr5 & SFX

I recently got two rolls of 120 SFX film developed in dr5. One roll was done in dev1 (neutral) and is very over exposed looking while the other was in dev2 (sepia) which also looks over exposed but not as much as the first roll.

These films were fresh and I rated them as advised on dr5's web page. I have only used dr5 twice but the same problem occured each time. I did get other films developed in dr5 and they were fine so I'm interested to hear from those who have used dr5 for SFX film and what their experience has been.
 
Call dr5 and talk to them about your experiences. I have not used dr5 and I have no connection with them. From reading posts from people that have had problems with dr5 I see a pattern that indicates that if you call them [not email] before you start posting they can be very response and helpful.

Give that a try first. Then you can report back on how to avoid the problems.

I remember this order, a grossly overexposed SFX roll, while the FP4 was fine.
We keep notes on all processing. To the write-up the roll was run correctly, but it wouldn't be outside the possibility of an error.

A key check for process error would be a dmax check. If the dmax is the same as the other rolls then there was an exposure error... different, a process error.Given the amount the roll was overexposed, the process error would have to be 2-3 stops.

But... everytime I hear about dr5 I get a little bit more interested in shooting black and white for slides. I haven't used positive film for ten years, and never b/w. It's also interesting to read about problems and how they are solved. It's not bad publicity for dr5 at all in my eyes.

Everything I've HEARD indicates DR5 offers extremely fine quality for the emulsions that are good for reversal.

I've never used them but have tried my own reversal processes and it seems they have their process nailed down tight.
 
..not allot of problems JPD. Just allot of High quality processing. Very, Very few in 13+ years. I like to keep the book open. In the end - the shooter has the control, not the processing. regards.


 

Hi, I did email you on Thursday and just notice you replied today so I'll reply to your suggestions as soon as I can.

Please note this thread was not started as a complaint, I simply wanted to hear how other users of SFX are getting on with their film in the dr5 process. Hearing their experiences may highlight any mistakes I am making. As I said, the other films I used in dr5 worked out great and I'm very happy with them.
