Not really a scientific test - or rather, really not. Just playing with the microscope I took over from @Doug Richardson (thanks Doug - really pleased with it!) https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/3x-olympus-ch-2-microscopes-220v.218662/

100x enlargement, approx. Photographed by holding my phone to the ocular - so not super duper pics.

The 40x and 400x pics are included here: https://tinker.koraks.nl/photography/up-close-personal-playing-with-a-microscope-ogling-grain/

Nice!

I’d seen comparisons of D-76 and D-96 and decided the difference wasn’t enough to make me chase down D-96.

But D-96 was better.

That's awesome, @koraks , check this guy out, until recently I didn't know large format microphotography even existed:

Wow! Not sure if that's where I'm heading (probably not), but that's way cool!

In the end what matters is how the grain renders at more normal magnification levels and in imaging systems that we normally use for scanning and printing. It's a different story from what you see through a microscope. Still, it's interesting to gain a glimpse of what's happening at a micro level and how that might translate to what you see in the final image.

It plays out simply. You see the microscopic grain and say "a tree would look good with that grain" then you go out and take pictures of trees and print them... Then you look at the print and say "yup that's what I'm talking about" and from then on you have a favorite film/developer combination.

It took some years in that rabbit hole... Thanks both of you for the compliments.

Oh hey, you're also the guy who helped me out with measurements on that old Zeiss Jena lens. I go on so many photographic tangents, I forget which way is up. I was seriously impressed with your photography! The compliments are well deserved.

This is great. Only issue is getting regular supplies of Double X - my bulk roll is almost out!

It would be great if EK would make it available again, now that they seem to be self-distributing again.
