this is what happens when you put an ND filter and a red filter on top of each other on a Summicron 35mm.

On some lenses you can stack filters, on others you can’t.
Also there are filters with a very thin rim.
So…

Second alternative is to start with a step-up ring and then use much wider rings.
Third alternative is a sheet filter holder of sufficient size.

That’s right. Nothing there to dodge.
I just found out that two filters stacked don’t work on this lens. Got a step up to 43mm since I have ND filters for my Zeiss biogon which is 43mm.
