DOOMO Meter S Review

I had been looking for a new exposure meter to use with my large collection of film cameras, but upon looking at the available options out there, I never found one that I thought met all my needs, until now.

The DOOMO Meter S is a new meter released in October that upgrades the company's earlier meter with an OLED display, rechargeable lithium battery, three (instead of two) mounting options, and a new mode allowing for either instant or continuous metering.

The DOOMO Meter S offers a heck of a lot of options for under $100USD, but is it any good?

How easy is it to read the display in strong sunlight?

On a sunny day, in indirect sunlight, the contrast is still very good and easy to read. However in bright direct sunlight, it gets washed out, but that's not any different than most electronic screens these days. Overall, I'd say it's very useable, just cup your hand over the screen if you're in direct sunlight.

As I started out the review, I've been (re) shooting film for about 7 years now and Sunny 16 and Outdoor 8 have served me well this long! I just thought it was time to try an actual meter. I'll still likely use the outdoor rules most of the time, but the DOOMO will serve some purposes too.

Thanks for the review. One feature I would love to see on a meter like this would be to be able to set up configurable shutter speeds for those "old sequence" cameras.

One comment: ISO on a digital camera is not necessarily the same as ASA/ISO film speed. Different manufacturers calculate the base sensitivity of their sensor differently - in particular Fuji, I believe, calculates differently from Canon/Nikon. This can lead to digital cameras showing different ISO/SS/Aperture values for a given scene, but ultimately giving the same "exposure" in the final capture. I think a better test of a meter's accuracy would be to use another known good or calibrated handheld meter.
