I've been replenishing (and filtering when necessary) my Potassium Oxalate for almost 20 years now. Occasionally some pretty green crystals form at the bottom of the jug. I'm not sure what this is or what causes it. Mike Ware once suggested that it might be something to do with chromium, but that was back in the days when I used the dichromate/oxalate method of contrast control. It still happens once in a while even though I haven't used dichromate in many years, so I guess that shoots down that theory.
I use chem lab type filter paper in a 5" diameter buchner filter. It gets most of the silt too. I've had the thing for a long time and can't remember where I got it but they can't be too difficult to find. Works much better than the coffee filter. You can even use it with a vacuum flask to get the job done quickly.
Oh yeah, and thanks for the olfactory memory - yuck!
