question is above. I learned such a technology at panavision patent.

ps. I WAS wrong , it says lanthanides down convert at patent paper , at the bottom , I added a paper for glass which up and down convert also.

That would seem ... extremely unlikely.

What makes a wavelength of light the wavelength / "colour" it is, is the amount of energy in each quantum of light energy. Infrared light is below the threshold of energy required to excite pigments in our eyes, and hence is invisible to us. Of course, other compounds can absorb it, hence the ability to make IR-sensitive films etc.

Optical glass refracts light by changing the speed of light through the medium, which causes the refractive effect at boundaries between material of different optical density. Chromatic aberration is caused (and corrected) because different wavelengths are slowed down by different amounts in various optical media.

Now what you are asking the glass to do, is to increase the amount of energy in each photon -- without changing its other properties (direction, basically). I cannot imagine how this might be done physically without violating the observed laws of quantum mechanics

There are many google pages about above technology , they say invented at 1990 and uses nanoparticles in glass. There is also wiki page about upconversion. There is such a technology , not my fantasy. My main reason toı ask does leitz used that tech earlier.

Oh up-conversion fluorescence is definitely a thing -- where a material absorbs, say, 2 infrared photons to emit one green one. But this would not be useful for making a lens, as the new photon would be emitted in a random direction. If you built these materials into a lens you'd just get a hazy, unsharp image.

I was wrong , patent talks about down conversion

below is old post , be careful

I read such a thing but I saw a discussion at panavion patent , they describe the tech as I asked first. And I read it upconversion gives out one green one red photon. My night time summitar shots have these colors and a vermillion hue and 3d faces. But I dont know.

That would be very interesting. I have my doubts but just because I doubt it doesn't mean it's impossible :smile: It would be very interesting and exciting if that's the case.

I agree , last night I decided to buy a panavision lens cheap , its 45000 dollars or more !!! Than I learned that fellini satrycon movie shot by panavision lenses and they have high grade colors like star wars or summicron , I was thinking that lanthanide glass may be intensify the colors , reading google , I found panavision mobile camera patent describes lanthanides as converting light to light.

The doping and preparation process necessary for lanthanides to do what you're reading about is incompatible with preparation for making LaK family of optical design glass.

Yes...there is none. The physical structures (carefully grown Lanthanide nanostructure vs. Lanthanum-doped silicate polycrystalline mixed in a big vat) are entirely different.

Steel is used both for making automobiles and pocket knives, but you can't exactly put a Volvo in your pocket.
