Does Epson typically release new products at Photokina?

I've been dragging my feet about getting a scanner for MF film (645, 6X7) for quite a while, mostly because it is not a pressing need. My volume of new pictures is low at the moment and the old ones can wait a bit longer; I'm also not fond of the scanning process (I have a Coolscan V ED for 35mm). I've decided that the answer for me, is to get a flatbed (probably an Epson 700 or 750, with better film holders) and use it to do "contact sheets" and maybe for prints up to around 8 X 10; if I've got a shot that needs to be larger, I'll get a drum scan done. Can't justify the price of a Nikon 9000 and would have concerns about service;not inclined to buy a used one. That said, I'm wondering if anyone has any intelligence concerning new/improved higher end Epson scanners coming out, maybe at Photokina? I'd like to get a machine before the end of the year and generally have pretty poor luck in terms of timing my purchases relative to new products coming out.

I have the 3200, 4870 and 4990 ... there are small and decreasing incremental advances between these scanners. In fact the 3200 does much better now (with improved software) than it did in the day it was released and reviewed.

I suggest that you'll be fine with 4870, 4990 or 700/750 scanner and just get into it.

I agree about the "joy of scanning" and its exactly why I keep using my Epson over my Nikon LS-4000 ... sure at the extreme the Nikon does a better job, but I can't lay 4 strips of 6 on the Nikon and walk away like I can with the Epson.

for what its worth I prefer the scans on my 4870

I am happy with with V750 now, before i wasn't, just i have to accept that it is not in same class of film dedicated scanner, so i should accept the results out of it and trying best and shouldn't expect more.
