Do you sign your prints?

I was having a discussion with my accountant...er, wife about this. Was wondering what the concensus of the group is.

My handwriting is so terrible i don't want to add my name and name of the photo but i sometimes do when because people ask for it.

I have always dry mounted my photos and signed the matte, but I'm considering printing my 8x10s on 11x14 and signing the print on the border and signing the window matte, too. As I'm not too valuable, machts nicht.

If matte means the passe partout (framing) of the image, I have never understood that notion...
it is not the passe partout I made - it is hopefully the image..

so always in the print - to the low right corner.
(sometimes on the border, but it isnt that often I make images with clear borders...)

i sign mine on the back of the print, and on the overmat.
i never use pen --- only pencil, and i always sign in 2 places so if the print is rematted at some point in the future, my mark is on the back of the print.

( only if i am going to try to sell in or hang it somewhere outside of my own home, otherwise they are unsigned )

When I sign a print I want the signature to go everywhere the print goes. So to sign a matt is not signing the picture as far as I'm concerned. Once the matt is removed it's anybody's picture.

Didn't respond to the poll because it won't let me choose two answers...I sign on the back of the print and I sign the matt if I indeed am selling it matted.

I float mount my prints so I sign on the board that the print is mounted to, not on the window mat. I also apply an archival sticker to the back of the mat with the edition information regarding the print and I sign that as well. I dislike my signature but most collectors and galleries want the work signed on the front so I use a very hard pencil and sign my name quite small.

I label my prints on the back with name, date and signature (and sometimes name of the photo club and my member # when entering competitions and shows).

Initially I did not sign prints because of horrible handwriting but then people interested in my work convinced me that I should. As an artist I believe that the print should be signed. Most of my work is dry mounted so I sign the matte. If it is not dry mounted I sign the print. I also attach a label to the back with image information and contact information. If they like the work they will know how to contact me.
