I wonder if anyone has experience disassembling the Nikon SB-800 flash. I bought this flash last week from a guy on Craigslist. I neglected to check it carefully because I didn't want to deal with him for too long due to the social distancing practice.
When he showed it to me I noticed the distance scale was working (the on on the LCD display to tell you the min and max distance for your settings). When I took it home I noticed that the wide angle diffuser panel is missing. Found a piece of plastic in the slot where the diffuser is supposed to be. The piece of plastic now I know is the hinge for the panel. I removed the piece and notice now the flash only zoom to 14mm and 17mm. Well I figured it out that the hinge has to be all the way in for the zoom to work in the normal range 24mm to 105mm. So I push the piece in using a thin strip of metal to push it in all the way. The zoom now work in the normal range. However the distance scale disappears now. I know that the distance scale would not be displayed if the flash head isn't straight ahead. So I figure the switch that indicate the flash head in normal position is not working. I wonder where it is located at and how to get to it.
Without it all is not lost as I don't care for the scale but it won't let me go into GN mode because in this mode the flash head has to be straight ahead.
So if someone has any knowledge please let me know. Please don't tell me not to disassemble the flash as it has high voltage in there. I repair stuff with 20,000V and 600V often. I know how to take precaution when working with high voltage.

The piece of white plastic is a reflector used to reflect light into the eyes when using a bounce flash. The defuser should be in that slot with the white plastic reflector.

I am interested in the post in this thread.

If you look at page A7.SB800 (page 23 in the PDF). The missing piece is SS060-15 and SS804-29. The reflector SS802-50 is there and the piece of plastic that I pulled out and had to push back in for the zoom to work is the SS040-14 which is the hinge for the wide angle diffuser.

I will soon start parting out my SB800 which was has battery damage but otherwise is pristine. Contact me for SB800 parts.
