released in 2004, 'Tarzan Retired' is a short documentary on the life and work of Miroslav Tichý (November 20, 1926 - April 12, 2011).
a native of Kyjov, Moravia, Tichý took up photography after abandoning painting and collage, believing them to be thoroughly exhausted.
primarily concerned with the female form, his subtle photographs use themes of movement, composition and contrast. technically, his pictures are full of 'mistakes' that compound the built-in limitations of his (hand-made) equipment - underexposed or overexposed, out of focus, blemished by dust in the camera, stained by willfully careless processing, mostly in a bathtub or bucket.
Tichý explains, "A mistake. That's what makes the poetry."
