Sounds like a question that should have been asked prior to purchase.

If it's a pre ai lens it should work just fine on your FE, provided you use stop down metering.

This is true.. Assumtion on my part. I believe it said discription Non AI? I might contact seller and see if they will alow me to send it back. I figured old lens + old camera equals a perfect fit. Not the case.

That lens would fit and couple to the meter just fine on an F, F2, Nikkormats up to FT2, etc. The FE is considerably newer than any of these. The FE2 will not accept non-AI lenses.

FE manual, instructions for using that lens on the FE on pp 30. http://www.cameramanuals.org/nikon_pdf/nikon_fe.pdf

Interesting.. The metal post sticking out of lens only moves when the lens is put on F22 only? It feel like it wants to go on however I'm reluctant to put to much force.

Todd, read the link to the manual that I posted. Otherwise you'll break the camera.

Press the button, flip up the tab on the camera
Mount the lens on the camera, press the DOF preview button to meter (or, in A mode, press DOF preview before firing shutter)
Easy as that...

If your camera is standard it has a strange meter coupling ring with a little button, does it have a little button on the aperture coupling ring, ie on the lens pin follower?

Got it!!! Yes.. does this affect the metering. Look like I have to view F-stop on ring and not in view finder.

Something you may wish to look into is an AI conversion kit for that lens. This will a) allow the lens to couple to the camera's meter and b) allow you to see the F-stop in the viewfinder - the conversion kit consists of a replacement aperture ring and can be exchanged for the original in about 10 minutes by a competent technician.

Chances there's a factory AI ring around is slim to none
The other option is have someone mill the aperture so it AI meter couples
http://www.aiconversions.com/

Unconverted, you need to press the DOF preview before you meter unless you're wide open, otherwise, the camera will think you're metering for wide open, but will close down the aperture when you take the shot

With all the information available on the internet there really is no excuse for not doing one's homework.

I figured old lens + old camera equals a perfect fit.

As Holmes once said "My dear Watson, assume nothing."

Thanks again for everyone help on this. I was sure I was over looking something and learned a long time ago NEVER force anything.

I recently bought a 24/2.8 Nikkor NC. The lens has been converted to AI but is missing the prong. I used it on a Nikkormat FT2 with stop down metering and the results are fine. You are right to observe that stop down metering is not convenient to use when shooting moving subjects.

some mid-age nikons had a coupling lever that flips up, some don't.

His, apparently, don't.

sounds to me like a good excuse to go buy an F2.
