Diopters for Olympus OM2

Hi Everyone

I'm coming to terms with the fact that my eyesight isn't what it used to be, and as such I realize that I need diopter lenses in order to focus properly with my camera. Some of my cameras have built-in diopter correction, but my Olympus OM2 does not. I have read that they used to sell diopter lenses specifically made for the OM2, but I haven't been able to find any on that big auction site. Are there alternatives available somehow?

I read that the rectangular diopter/eye cups for the Nikon EM/FG fit OM1/2. I have one on order and will update this post when it arrives.

Get hold of one of the OM eye cups. These are a two piece construction (in addition to the rubber cup) that is designed to hold a lens. Then take a pair of old glasses and cut a disk out of the lens using a dremel tool (masking take over the lens will save it from scratches during the operation). Viola, your focusing problem is corrected. This works especially well if you have some other issue, such as an astigmatism, where a diopter won't do the job.

Also, OM's have sufficient eye relief that you can wear glasses while composing/focusing and still see the entire viewfinder.

I can confirm that nikon diopters fit perfectly. I have one since a few weeks.

Cheers! Maybe they are easier to find then... I read somewhere that the viewfinder in an OM is already at -5 so I would have to take that into account when ordering the diopter, is that true?

As far as I know the finder in many slr's is -1.
You can buy the nikon diopters new or used on ebay.
Mine was like €20.

The OM1/2 viewfinder is -0.5.

I would suggest that you bring your Olympus into a discount chain drugstore and try out the different diopter inexpensive reading glasses to determine the appropriate strength of Nikon diopter to be fitted.

The Nikon FG/EM diopter -3.0 eyepiece came in and fits my OM1 perfectly. I now have an Olympus OM Eyecup with -2.0 diopter available. Let me know if that is what you need.

Actually went ahead and got myself checked out for some contact lenses instead, might not need the dioptres

You might also try using a split image focusing screen which seems to make focusing a little easier for my 70+ year old eyes.

I need a diopter for my OM2 and OM2n eyepieces. Am I correct in reading this thread that the Nikon FG/EM diopter is the lens mounted in a housing that slides over the viewfinder of the OM 2 the way the Olympus eyecup thing does? I got an eyecup and was going to try to cut down a lens to fit but this looks much simpler. And if the OM viewfinder has - 1/2 in it then I would subtract that as I am nearsighted and need a negative correction? Thanks in advance!!!

If you are nearsighted, when your vision is corrected for distance the initial correction lens might have a value like -3.5 diopters. When a nearsighted person needs supplemental correction for reading, because the lens of the eye no longer accommodates sufficiently, he might obtain supplemental readers at the drugstore with a strength like +1.0 diopters.
For a 'single lens' solution (rather than the initial lens plus supplemental reader) for reading, in the above example, the single lens would have a value of -2.5 diopters.

What is especially confusing in purchasing camera correction diopters is that the manufacturer usually show corrections as a Delta value... +1, +2, +3 which are Delta values in addition to whatever the fundamental eyepiece happens to have as a True Diopter value (-0.5). So '+1' delta is actually +0.5, '+2' delta is actually +1.5, etc.
But some manufacturers show the Actual value of a diopter, not the Delta values...
+0.5, +1.5, +2.5 true diopter value (rather than +1.0, +2.0 +3.0 delta value)

Thanks for all the help -- I got a minus 2 diopter on Ebay -- it fits snugly (unlike the Olympus eyecup) and was inexpensive. As I have some astigmatism I may try a minus 3 to see if it's even sharper. Or try to cut up an eyeglass lens and fit it into the frame. But these are great finds for OM fans!

Hi Frank53, old thread but just have to ask, I have the Olympus OM2n with the OM euecup 1 but I need the +2 dioptre lens, you say the Nikon FG correction lens actually fit the OM Cameras, are you saying I must use the complete Nikon unit & not just the glass?

I think Nikon would label their diopter 1 diopter less than what it is. For example the 0 diopter from Nikon would be 1 diopter. So when you go to the store and find the 1 diopter glass works for you you would only need the 0 diopter from Nikon.

Or in my case a +1 dioptre Nikon, as opposed to the +2 OM dioptre to compensate for the original -1 dioptre in the actual OM viewfinder.
