diopters for F3hp and FM2?

Hi guys!

This is my first post. Great site!. I have an F3hp and FM2 (along with an N90s and an F100). Lately, I'm interested in using the F3 more and have found out that that I really need a diopter to be able to focus (Don't understand why, 20 years ago I never needed one ).

Anyway, I've looked at KEH and B&H and although B&H has a couple of diopters available, they don't have the whole range and I'm not sure which one I need. Does anyone know of a shop somewhere that might have the whole range of diopters so that I can order a couple and if they are the wrong strength, I can return them and get the correct ones?

I had pretty much the same problem. The eyepiece from the N90 (and probably for the F4 and F5 as well) will fit the F3HP prism perfectly, so you might want to try asking for that. Before you order, pay a visit to your local optician. He can probably tell you which power you'll need. The default diopter of some Nikon SLR's is not zero, so that will need to be taken into account. Perhaps he can measure it, or failing that you should be able to dig up that information with a call to Nikon.

If I remember correctly, all Nikon prisms are at -1 diopter before you add external correction. You need an external correction lens that allows you to see clearly at a distance of 3'/1 meter.

ask your eye doctor which power you "shooting eye" needs, then you just need to find the one they recommend.

your eye doctor doesn't know if you have a - or + need? do you wear glasses?

gosh, my doctor knew immediately what power i needed for which eye.

Do the diopter numbers correlate with the numbers used for prescription contact lenses? I use +4.00 contacts...

perhaps, as that was what i used when i needed to use a diopter. it seemed to work and as my eye changed i had to change the diopter as well.

The standard Nikon prism is set up so the screen appears to be 1 meter (~3+ feet) away. The standard eyepiece is clear glass.

I am nearsighted but when wearing glasses I am, of course, farsighted. With age my accommodation changed so that I get eyestrain focusing as close as 3 feet away. Changing the eyepiece lens to what Nikon calls a "0" diopter - actually a +1 diopter 'magnifying' correction - moves the focusing screen to infinity, which is the distance my eyeglasses are corrected for. No more eyestrain.

I'd find a new eye doctor.

However, do you wear glasses normally?
If so take your glasses to where ever you bought them or a place like Visionworks and they will measure the correction for you.

I had Visonworks measure mine and I was -1.5 so I got a -2 for my Mamiya 645 and now I don't have to wear my glasses to focus.
