Dimage Scan Multi II - Can't get it to work, anyone have one of these running?

Bought a Dimage Scan Multi II but have been having the worst time getting it to work. Connected it with an Adaptec SCSI card (2930CU) to an old PC tower I have, fresh Windows XP install - no other software.

It doesn't have the original software with it, although I did manage to find the Minolta scan utility - keeps giving a connection error, though.

Silverfast claims it can't find the scanner.

Vuescan finds the scanner, but it acts very strangely - it freaks out if it's started with no film inside, and if I then put the carrier in it doesn't find it.

If I start Vuescan with the carrier loaded and try to scan, the calibration routine doesn't work - it hangs if I remove the film carrier and if I leave it in it scans but shifts the carrier so it's scanning half of the image and half of the separators.

This is driving me nuts, anyone gotten one of these to work?

that's true, start the scanner first and then the computer. mine came with 2 programs. dimage easy scan utility gives an error but dimage scan utility works fine. so I never tried to find out why the "easy" one doesn't work. would be interested though.
