This is a comprehensive multi-day program which has been structured to conveniently provide flexibility in meeting each student’s needs. In this course, you will learn not only the basics of “How to make a photograph” versus just taking a snapshot, but also advanced techniques that will help you improve your overall photographic skills. You will learn how to develop your own creative vision through use of composition, working with natural and flash lighting, control of motion, use of perspective and depth-of-field, plus other valuable skills all intended to help sharpen your photographic capabilities.

You will be given a hands-on introduction to the digital darkroom via Adobe Photoshop® Lightroom 5. Here you will learn how to catalog and post process your images after taking them including organizational file management, post capture processing and image adjustment, and output options. While we will be working exclusively with Lightroom, the information and methodology learned here will prove to be invaluable regardless of the digital darkroom software you choose for your own use.

In the program, we will take daily field trips into the beautiful Swan Valley capturing some of its unique grandeur via photography. Each day will be a full day, regardless of the weather. Time will be split between fieldwork, classroom discussion, and computer lab. Review of student imagery is a vital part of the learning process and will also be included. This program is open to all skill levels from beginner through advanced. We will be concentrating on the Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) Camera. Those with point and shoot cameras are also invited to participate although you will not fully appreciate the benefit of all instruction given.

Prerequisites – knowledge of and familiarity with your camera equipment. All cameras are different. Due to time constraints, it is not possible for the instructor to devote limited time trying to figure out for you how your camera works. Therefore it is absolutely MANDATORY that you know how your camera functions and where all of its controls are located before participating in this program.

Bring a lap-top computer with Adobe Photo Lightroom 5 installed – a free, fully functional 30-day trial is available from Adobe.com – just choose language and operating system (Windows/Mac) and click “Download now”

Meeting Time: See Itinerary

Meeting Place: Photographers Formulary Camp Meeting Hall

Equipment: Please see Basic Gear List. Weather can be variable and chilly this time of year so please come prepared with appropriate clothing including rain gear, and sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Make sure you have at least 2 liters of water per day. We will be carrying all photography equipment and personal outdoor gear on short hikes (1-4 miles), so think about how you want to carry equipment and how much equipment you want to carry. Please pack all of your equipment in a small daypack and/or camera bag, so that we can fit everyone comfortably into our van.

Please bring the following camera equipment:
•Camera: 35 mm Digital (DSLR), Point and Shoot, or 35 mm film camera; lenses (wide angle and telephoto or zoom); enough Memory cards for four days of photography (4-8MB min).
•Electronic flash; Off-camera flash synch-cord – optional but recommended
•Electronic shutter release – optional but recommended
•Plastic bags – Bring several 1 gallon and smaller size Ziploc bags and a large heavy-duty garbage bag – for covering equipment should it rain.
•Extra batteries for cameras, flashes and charger(s)
•Sturdy Tripod with adjustable head. If you need to purchase a tripod – do not waste your money on inexpensive, skimpy tripods – you will be sorely disappointed with the results.
•Sturdy camera bag, backpack or fanny pack for carrying equipment, extra clothing/rain gear, snack and water
•Manuals for all equipment (each camera/brand/model is different – do not rely on instructor to be knowledgeable about your camera’s operation)
•Selection of filters: circular polarizer, neutral density filters (3 or more stop)
•Lens cleaning brush, cloths, fluids
•Any additional lenses you may have such as wide-angle lens, macro lens (or other macro devices such as extension tubes), long telephoto.
•Lap-top computer with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 installed (see above for link to free trial software) for hands-on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom instruction plus image review/critique.
• USB Flash (Thumb) Drive to transfer images for student reviews.

Physical Requirements: Moderate- Hiking distance covers less than four miles and less than 1,000 feet elevation gain per day.

Transportation during course: We will be traveling by car-pool.

Weather: This course will not be canceled due to weather.
