Digital 8x10 camera?

$106k for 12mp resolution, 75 micron pixels... that's what, 6lp/mm?
But wait a few years! I find it interesting.

Dang...that's neat.

As much as I like shooting film, I know it won't always be around. This is a step in the right direction with innovative products.

The concept of a full size 8x10 (or 9x11 in this case) 'digital negative' would make an interesting workflow for a hybrid large format photographer. No more shooting small format digital, printing a negative and contact printing. With this, it would be the exact same size as you shot it.

Strange beast. I wonder what is the target market? Presumably there is one?

Yes, someone with $106,000 who also happens to be a photographer.

You can buy three dozen Deardorff V8s and three dozen 14" Gold Dot Dagors for $106k. You might even have enough left over for a box of Tri-X. You'll get a lot more than 12mp, too

Well, some of us are more philanthropic than others. I see you would like to help out some friends, acquaintances and possibly less-than-acquaintances-who-you-know-only-by-username-on-photrio with a Deardorff and Gold Dot Dagor. I'm ok with that - I suppose I can buy my own film.

Sorry, mine will be buried with me.

Can't afford one. If lotto cooperates...sure. Now that big sensor tech is growing, maybe they make a FF 6 x 6 sensor for the old film Hassy. I'd love to slap a 6mp FF back on my SWC...as long as it is affordable. Maybe $1200 or so for the back. Good project for India or China. Reliable and great IQ is a must. 6mp is almost double IQ what film neg is, so it would be fine to replace a film back.

A 35 mm frame is roughly equal to 24mp.

this has been around for a while, there was a guy who had an 8x10 low-res sensor developed to replace 8x10 polaroid film for his use. Likely this is the same sensor.

Let's say, you use it to capture 1000 images. That comes to a cost of over $100 for each image.

Most development projects are expensive at the beginning. In less than a decade I bet you will be able to buy an 8x10 digi back for dirt cheap. I hope I'm around to use one. I can just imagine the DR and IQ will be stunning. If the demand is there, it will happen.

bill c, has been working on this project for a while.
good to see he's getting some press on it !

Love that shallow DOF, wonder what's involved in taking it out of the studio and into the field?

i wonder if they can make an adapter for lumedyne rechargable battery packs...

I predict these will be selling for US$1,000,000 when they're obsolete and very rare on the used (collector) market... in about three years.

for a hobbyist it might be a little expensive, but for someone using the camera for business to make $$, its a write off and they can charge a pretty good $$ for huge digital images
made with it.

you wrote "using the camera for business to make $$"

this is 8x10 monochrome 12MP

8x10 full frame hi res (Tera-pixels) might find a market

12MP images we know have a market (lo-res press such as some sports)

put the two together and they don't add synergistically, they cancel out, because an 8x10 can't be used for on-the-run photography, and a 12MP image is no use to the hi-res boys and girls.

I'm puzzled exactly which type of photographer would find this useful, I'm genuinely curious, am I missing something, can you suggest what "business" that might be?
