Differences in early and late Nikon F2

I am curious if there are design differences between early SN Nikon F2's (SN < 74xxxxx) versus later units (SN > 79xxxxx).

With cars, I lean towards later is better, but not sure what Nikon changed internally through the years on this camera.

Other than just lack of wear, is there any good reason to get a later unit?

Thanks Ronnie. Looking at those SN, most of the changes seem to be early on in the production cycle. Good info.

According to the page, the changes happened in the first 1600 bodies. Given how may were made, encountering one of these early ones seems unlikely, if not rare. The obvious change (which I'm sure you're aware of) is the likely finder that will be attached. I have an early-ish body (71xxxxx) with a DP-1 finder, and a latish body (78xxxxx) with a DP-3 finder. Aside from the different colors and the finders, I haven't noticed anything on the outside that differs.

I would guess Nikon made small, running changes, all throughout the camera's production. Many manufacturers do this.

My memory from about 40 years ago insn't exactly perfect, but I seem to recall the local Nikon sales rep telling me the later F2's (F2A and F2AS) had improved mechanical workings. Don't remember exactly what was improved. Anyone have any idea what the improvements could be?

With pre 1974 F2 cameras the plastic battery holder has a tendency to crack ....it is a $10 part but you have to take the whole mirror box off to get to it !!! the newer bodies are not affected.

If you have the camera repair skills you can get a F2 for next to nothing with this issue and replace the part your self

I also think that the base plates had some changes to strengthen for motor drives
