This is the problem with buying from Fotoimpex and J&C who re-badge products and importers who sell materials under the manufacturers own brand names.

Usually I could tell you but I've not kept an eye on things over the past few month . . . . .

I believe they are the same, but I'll buy Varycon since I know what that is and how to get decent results from it.

I have printed both, and I believe they are the same paper, but Blaze-on purchased some after hearing my opinion through Per, and has had difficulty duplicating similar results. I sent a few sheets to Per for him to try against the Adox, but I haven't heard from him if he's had a chance to try it out.

If you check the fotokemika website it quite clearly lists two different VC FB papers - Varycon and Fineprint - IIRC Varycon is somewhat faster and available in a wider range of surface textures.

Hope this helps,

If you're writing about Adox FinePrint VarioClassic FB, I'd say it's not at all the same as Varycon. Varycon is much warmer. Some say VarioClassic FB is very reminiscent of Dupont Varilour.

The two papers I'm referring to are the Adox Vario Classic (from J&C) and the Fotokemika Varycon (from FreeStylePhoto), both FB.

In my experience the Fotokemika Varycon is neutral, and I was under the impression the Adox Vario was suppose to be neutral also (LINK).

So from my understanding, these are two different papers, and I'm guessing they each have their own characteristics, such as tonal scales ect. Am I right in assuming this?

Is one of these papers suppose to be of a higher quality then the other?

Thanks,
Martin

As far as quality I'd say they are equal. I don't regularly use Varycon, but found it nice when I did. It's hard to find in Sweden these days.

Regarding tonal scale, image tone etc, they are quite different. If I remember correctly, Varycon separate highlights better than shadows: it should be used with a film that matches that.

I find Varycon to be much warmer than VarioClassic. VarioClassic is close to blue-black in highly concentrated Dektol. Selenium toning does not make it go purple, but rather slightly colder. I haven't toned Varycon with selenium and cannot say how it reacts.
