What is the difference between Ilford Rapid Fixer and Ilford Hypam Rapid Fixer?
I normally use Ilford Rapid Fixer CAT 198 4583 to fix B&W T Max sheet film after Rollo Pyro development or Kodak Polymax VC fiber paper after development. Some how I mistakenly received 5 litres of Ilford Hypam Rapid Fixer CAT 175 8285 in my last supply order. I haven’t found any difference in reading the instructions. Is okay to make this substitution for my needs or should I send this back?

Thanks for your help.

Not too sure whether there is any difference.I believe Hypam was the old name.

they are both the same. One, the Rapid fixer was the name in the US, the other was the UK name, about a year or so ago, they moved to production plant to the UK and just kept the one name.

Ann and Roy,

Thank you very much for clearing this up.

There is a small difference in chemical composition, but both are used in the same way. I also think you can add a hardener to the Hypam which you can't do to the other.

From what I've read, this is absolutely correct. I got one of those 5-liter bottles of it for Christmas so I read up on it. I do not use a hardener, but the ability to add one seems to be the only difference.

i have not read the label, just got the information directly from the Ilford folks so didn't pay much attention. I never use hardner in this fixer so it has not been an issue.

I got confused about that a while back too.
I contacted Ilford, they told me that basically they were the same thing.
The hardener thing rings a bell, but I never use hardener
