Hello,

I had a problem this weekend developing TMX and TMY TMAX 100 and 400 together in the same batch.

I use Paterson tanks and one batch was with 120 film and the other was 35mm.

Developer is Clayton F76 and the fixer is Clayton.

*Developed TMX at 6:30 minutes
*Developed TMY at 6:45 minutes.
*30 second Kodak stop bath.
*4 minutes with Clayton fixer.
*30 second rinse
*2 minute hypo-clear
*5 minute rinse

I first developed two 120 rolls of TMY with no problems.

Next I developed one 120 roll of TMY in the tank with one roll of 120 TMX and the TMX did not develop. I had blank film.

I then developed two rolls of 35mm TMY with no problems.

Next I developed one 35mm roll of TMY in the tank with one roll of 35mm TMX and the TMX did not develop. Again, I had blank film just like the 120 mixed batch.

Can anyone explain the reason why the mixed batches had one good development and one bad development?

I won't do this again, and I would love to know what happened.

It has nothing at all to do with mixing the 2 types of Tmax together.

If the films were completely blank then they weren't exposed. The fact that the TMY developed tells you there was no problem with the developer.

In commercial darkrooms it is quite normal to mix film types and from different manufacturers during development.

Alan, I agree with Ian.

But to be sure, check the clear films and see if the edge markings appear. If the edge markings appear, then the film was developed correctly.

I have done this as I'm sure most people over a lifetime of developing film have. you're not the first and you won't be the last.

Mick.

No edge markings

The factory edge markings did not make it through the process.

It was as if the developer did not touch the second roll of film and the fixer took away everything.

Its nice to read that types are mixed.

I am still confused.

So which one didn't get developed, the roll on top or the roll on the bottom? If the one on top, then you might have not had enough developer in the tank. If the one on bottom, then you surely developed an unexposed roll of film. Still confused?

The bottom one did not develop. I am sure there was adequate developer.

I am going to start over and watch my steps very carefully.
