Developing Foma film in Adox aph 09

First of all. I recently joined the APUG community, weeee! Being a 20 year old lad from Denmark trying to stick with the lovely artform that is "old school photography" while everyone around me keeps saying:"why not digital? its much more easier" isn´t quite easy, so I am grateful that a place like APUG found its way to my computer :O) well...

I am going to develope Foma 400 35mm films in a caninster that can contain two reels at a time. I am a little bit confused... can i find a chart somewhere? I found some foma charts but none containd the APH 09. Further more, how many ml am I suppose to use in a 2-reel-canister (when developer and water is mixed, that is)?

Hope someone out there can help me.

I believe that APH 09 is just repackaged Calbe R09. Check the Massive Dev Chart for the time and temperatures in this developer. http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.html

Use the same times as for Rodinal, but dilute at 1:40 instead of 1:50, 1:80 instead of 1:100.

Unless you want a lot of grain I would suggest to take another developer for the Fomapan 400 in 35mm format.

ok. will it be so so grainy that it would be a real shame an actually ruin my photos? and, how many ml of mixed developer and water do I need for a canister holding 2 reels of 35mm.?

Depends on the subject. Some people wants to have some grain in their photos.
Fomadon R09/ADOX APH09/Calbe R09 is a para-amino phenol developer so this type likes slow agitation. If you shake too much the result will be also more grainy.

For a Jobo 1520 developing tank (Inverse dev. volume min. 485ml): 1+40 R09, 12,5ml + 500ml water but for two films you are also just on the limit for the amount of concentrate /film (6-7ml)
For Rodinal (Agfa) it's about the same. (Officially 10ml concentrate/film.)

If you want less grain with the Fomapan 400 film you have to pull the film in E.I. and put it in an ultrafine grain developer. Rodinal/R09 is more suitable for classical slow and medium speed film, certainly in 35mm format.

I do not think you can speak from ruin your film/photos, it's also just a matter of taste.

I shall not hesitate then :O) I decided to go with the 09 which is all I got at this point. My developing tank is a Peterson tank system 4 an it says that for a 35mm I need a solution of 290 ml. so if I am to make 2 films at a time should I just double up so it will be like:

290 ml of water and 7,25 ml of developer

2 films = 580 ml of water and 14,5 ml of developer

290ml for one 35mm film.
500ml for 120/220roll film or 2X35mm films. But the content of the volume should be on the bottom of the tank. But 600ml will also fit into the tank.

you can see that even developed in a speed enhance developer like Microphen the Fomapan 400 will hardly reach the E.I. 400.

Remembering my Rodinal tests with this film it will reach an E.I. of just over iso 250, so I expect the same in R09.
If you have already exposed your film on E.I. 400 I would suggest to develop to the longer developing time. You will have less details in your shadows but maybe better than too thin negatives.
