I got the HP5 @3200, developed with 1+31 Ilfotec HC at 20C, the development time should be 22min about.

If I want to cut the time in a half (11min) by only rising the temperature, is there any known pastern to follow, in order to know the right developer temperature to start with?

It's not guaranteed to be accurate, but Ilford has published a general development time - temperature chart for use with any developer. You can find it in any of their films' datasheet, such as this (see page 5). Good luck!

If you wish to cut the development time in half, you need to raise the temp about 10C (or 18F). (This MIGHT be a bit too much, however, depending upon your developer formula which, in the case of Ilfotec, I am not privy to), OR, instead, you could add a bit of sodium carbonate to the developer and use your standard 20C (68F) temp. How much carbonate? You will have to experiment by exposing a few cm of film (why waste a whole roll?), but I would start at about 1 mL of sodium carbonate added to 500 mL of working solution developer.

You want to increase the energy of that developer, marciofs, and that is accomplished with either a temp rise or a more alkaline developer solution. But, you COULD, also, increase the energy of that developer by increasing its concentration. If you are currently using a 32X dilution, as you are now, try, instead, with only a 10X diultion (i.e., 1 + 9). - David Lyga

Hi marciofs,

Not sure where you got 22 minutes for HP5 at 1 + 31 dilution of Ilfotec HC?

The last time that I helped a new student develop HP5+ rated 3200 we developed it according to Ilford’s recommendation of Ilfotec HC diluted at 1 + 15 for 11 minutes at 20˚C. As you would expect there was a significant loss of shadows but the mid-tones to highlights were good but every negative needed to printed on #3.5 using an enlarger with a diffuse light source. We adjusted the development of the subsequent roll to 12 minutes and 15 seconds and this proved to be the right time for my student’s equipment, way of working and invention technique (4 inversions in first 30 seconds and then 1 inversion every 30 seconds thereafter).

Hope that helps.

Bests,

David.

I actually don't want make it more concentrate because I don't want the higher concentration results in a higher contrast images in my negatives.

I figured out the 22min with dilution of 1+31 by myself, because I was looking to develop it in lower developer concentration, in attempt to make images less contrasty. I just developed a negative this way and it seems just right. But I didn't see the positives images yet.
