So, John Powers has been generously hosting gatherings the last few years on his property. While I don't have a pond or a national park across the street, I do have a driveway and a backyard! So, anyone who's interested, come on up to Royal Oak, MI.

We were thinking either Thanksgiving weekend or the first weekend in December. Let me know your preference. This should hopefully be early enough to avoid any snow related issues.

On the agenda - Dead Link Removed

"The exhibition surveys Kertész’s career with nearly 100 photographs taken in Hungary, Paris and New York, many of which are drawn from the DIA’s permanent collection. For Kertész, the years spent in Paris in the early 20th century were especially pivotal. An Intuitive Eye will highlight his Parisian photographs to demonstrate his unique style that combined the techniques and compositions of photojournalism with the aesthetic sensibilities of abstraction employed by Modernist artists. In his photographs of Parisians at rest, play or work in the side streets, public parks and quiet corners of the city, Kertész created a vision of Paris that has helped to define the city as a place where the quiet traditions of daily life are revered."

We can go shooting for anyone willing to brave the cold. If you're interested in shooting, there are some abandoned spaces downtown that are pretty interesting. There are lots of parks in the area - Belle Isle being one option. If we are willing to drive, Ann Arbor (U of M campus) and / or lots of farm land are nearby as well.

Also, Greenfield Village / Henry Ford Museum is open. In the Village, tripods are allowed. There are hundreds of historic homes and buildings that were moved there, to create a "town." Very fun place to shoot. And, many of the buildings are heated, so you can pop in to warm up. Next door to the Village is Henry Ford Museum, which I don't think allows tripods, but is warm and has lots of history related things to look at. The Henry Ford

We're opening up our house as well - if you want to come up, you are welcome to sleep at our place. We have lots of floor space, and also a large backyard for anyone willing to brave the weather and put up a tent. There are also hotels in the area to match any budget - let me know if you would like help finding a close one.

Additionally, we have a large darkroom in case anyone would like to use it for changing film / developing / printing / sleeping.

So - who's interested and what weekend works for everyone?

First weekend in December I think would be our vote. We will have guests in from Florida for turkey day and they will be there for a while I believe. I'll double check with Sue.

Jeff & Eva,

Thank you for doing this. Great idea to see some more of Detroit. First weekend Dec. would be better for us. Dolly is gong to a wedding in Boston Thanksgiving weekend. I will be baby sitting the Girls. Cindy, Savannah and I are going to quietly look for one of Eva's turkeys while Dolly is gone.

First weekend in December would work for me as well. Of course I am interested in the old buildings in Detroit. Or Belle Isle if there is any abandoned things there. I learned my lesson about camping with the Bannows, so I will be hoteling it!
Dan

Come on Dan, it's certain to be warm then!

I'm interested. The first weekend in December works for me, too. Detroit, Belle Isle, the Detroit skyline from Canada, Ann Arbor, etc. It's all good.

What did they do this time? Do we have to go back to encircling them with barb wire again?

John: they were well behaved this time. I was referring to the camping trip I took with them in the "spring" where we had rain, sleet, snow, gale force winds, and a shitstorm all in the same 24 hour period.

Jeff & Eva,
Just booked a place for Sue and I to come to your outing. We found a hell of a deal at:
Residence Inn Detroit Troy/Madison Heights
32650 Stephenson Highway Madison Heights, MI 48071 USA Phone: 1-248-583-4322

If you do not already have a Marriott rewards number get one before booking, do the reservation online. We looked for one close to your area... 3 to 5 miles away I believe, right off Rt 75.

I'm a loyal Marriott brand kind of guy when ever possible. You can book rooms for $ 66 plus change a night between 9/24 and Oct 10th (I believe at that rate.) Small suites with free breakfast looked like small kitchens in each room and all.

Figured we can cancel if need be, but we are certainly looking forward to being there.

SO... Who do we need to contact to get written permission and or escort to go into the Train Station there in town on Saturday, even Friday if its a city worker I'd take off a day from work to do that ??????????

Waiting to get my C41 4x5 and 6X6 Negs back from last trip to John's event. I'll see John and Dolly on 10-10-10 when I am up that way. Hoped for more fall colors but it is what it is.

Lee, that hotel is only a few miles from my house and should work great. It's right off of I-75 as well so easy to get to when coming up.

RE: train station - it is owned by a local "businessman" who doesn't grant official access, unless you want to shoot Transformers 28 or whatever. So, we can enter "at your own risk". I've been in many times and never had a problem though, but it is technically trespassing. The issue is that the city wants to take down the building and the owner doesn't want to pay for it. So, they fight about it a lot and nothing happens.

Glad to see the interest. We'll make it the first weekend of December then - Dec. 3rd through the 5th. I'll send out a message with my address as things get closer. Please let me know if you plan on coming and when we might see you.

The plan is to meet up at our house Friday evening, heading out for dinner with anyone who might make it in time. Afterwards, we can chat and catch up.

Saturday, we can all meet up at the house in the morning, then head out to shoot. Downtown is about 20 minutes away, and offers lots to photograph. If we want abandoned, that can be provided - with the inherent risks.

Saturday night, dinner and then showing prints and talking at our place until the wee hours. A darkroom tour will be happily provided for anyone interested.

Sunday, breakfast and then the DIA for the Kertész exhibit.

Sound good?

I will be attending. I just checked on the hotel and am trying to figure out if I can get a discount. At this point, I'm having a tough time convincing my wife to come along.

I/we can leave the Cleveland area around 4:30, which should put us in Detroit by 7:30.

Who else is going?

Jeff
