Denmark to small for B&W magazine(UK)??

The December issue didn't arrive as scheduled and now we hit January 2008. I went to the local newsstand thinking I should enjoy the weekend reading two issues of the mag when the newsstand owner brought the bad news to me " the ditributer in UK found DK to to small a market so we wont recieve the mag anymore"
Is this really true?
So now what? I have to subscripe in order to get so is it worth it or should I subscripe to View Camera Magazine instead.

If you like the magazine, it's probably cheaper for you to subscribe, so it's really up to you to decide whether the magazine is right for you. Personally, I found December's issue to be quite good.

Soeren, it is disapointing to hear the DK market is considered too small for continued distribution of B&W Photography.

If you like the mag. then subscription is the way to go. With regard to choosing between B&W and View Camera they are somewhat different. I used to subscribe to VC but had to save a few pounds here and there so I stuck with B&W. I like its more general articles, plus it's monthly which gives me my 'fix' more often. However if your interest is solely LF then I can understand your desire to go with VC mag.

Norway is smaller (population-wise) than Denmark, so that would mean it drops off the shelf here too?

I subscribe, so I haven't noticed if the current issue is available or not.
(I subscribe to ViewCamera and LensWork too).

Well I guess mine's still waiting in the UK, issue 80 that is along with all the others.B&W is most definitely not on sale anywhere here in Turkey.

Am disappointed at the distribution situation but not wholly surprised. We don't control distribution, but I wish we could. Increasingly these days people subscribe to specialist titles such as ours in order to guarantee delivery. A wholesaler will take a view on the local market and will decide for themselves if a specialist title is warranted in its portfolio to offer newsagents. If there's little or no demand then its replaced by something else more mainstream - sad state of affairs I know

I guessed ist was so. The situation though is that all the copies on display are sold each and every month so............... And not all photographers are online or read about the mags on the web so the only way for them to know the existence of a magazine is to see it at the newsstand so Im really disapointed by the decission. Hmm see if I cn find the money to subscripe.

For really big and influental businesses there is no such thing as small market. Only small companies have fear of small markets. If you have only one reader in one country, you have to find a way to keep him/her happy. What is most known brand in history (excluded religion). I think it is Coca Cola. Because where ever you go, at middle of deserts, at top of muntains, if there are only 2 villages with 10 people in them, you can find refrigitrator with red labelled bottle in it... They are big because there is no small markets for them. I don't use their products, I don't like them at all, as company, but that is fact.

But, then again, businesses are like bureaukracy. At one point they start to act like people are there for them and not they are there for people. So, you should be gratefull that they exists and you should work hard to get their issue/product, instead they should work hard to reach you as consumer/reader. That is total switching of values. Well, world is like that today

Therefore Christmas is the extra 13th issue.

I'm a bit disapointed with you guys. Distribution of the mag has been terminated in DK and all you care about is which issue is which
Ok I can easily subscribe to the mag if I decide to but not all danes can. I know several who either don't have a computer or can't pay online. having the bank taking care of the payment is just to expensive. Then there is the question of how to gain new readers.... Arh never mind were to small a market anyway.
Thats a bit more money to use on film.

Søren, have you thought that perhaps the distributor in Denmark is also at fault, if they were prepared to take a reasonable number on the basis of no returns, paying for the full number then things might be different. Usually magazines are sold on a returns basis, unsold magazines are returned by shops to the distributor.

Another option which happens with some magazines is private import and sales through photographic galleries, this happens in the UK with some US, Japanese etc photographic magazines.

Soeren I understand you being pissed off mate and management saying they do not controll distrobution is no help to you.
However I percive a change in attitude at the mag of late as Anolouge photography has been given specific mention in editorials of late and I percive less hostility and more understanding of us film users despite that damn digi listing. My point being that there is maybe something management can do for you photographers in Denmark even if it is only to take an add in a national paper or local photo mag to anounce their existance and how to subscribe.

I belive the views expressed here on APUG changed the attitude of management and they have listened, so if you can come up with some suggestions as to what paper/mag would reach the greatest target audience maybe we can persuade David to run some adds. Also if you subscribe yourself once you have read the mag pass it on so that eventualy it ends up in a dentists or doctors waiting room where who knows it may start a newbi on the road of B&W .

It's as easy as ringing up the publisher and telling him your credit card number.
I guess it comes down to the fact, if one wants to read this mag or not. Subscribing is also significantly cheaper than buying each copy seperately.

Yep but you still need a credit card valid in UK ruling out most danish cards except Visadk.

Not really but maybe you are right. I just refer to what the newsstand owner told me.
Ofcource the decission is based( I hope) on economics and ofcource its not a dissaster. Denmark is after all a small country with only 5mill inhabitants

Ill see if one of the big photostores still carry the mag. Or maybe that will turn out to be more expensive so Id better subscripe

I've just been informed that the mag will no longer be available in Australia. The last copy I was able to get was issue 77 October 2007. It seems Oz is now too small a market for the mighty B+W.
