Delta 3200 in XTOL 1:1

Any one have some good starting times for Delta 3200 in XTOL 1:1? I bought a couple rolls to try out and compare with TMZ, but I realized after I shot my test roll, the XTOL pdf doesn't have times at all for D3200, and the D3200 sheet only has one times for XTOL full strength at 75 degrees. I've become spoiled by the multiple temps and dilutions in the XTOL pdf.

I've seen a couple times on the internet, mostly in the 12-18 minute range depending on the EI, but if any one had a set of times that works for them, it'd be great.

This thread seems to have come to an end very quickly with only one reply. Like Tim I have moved onto Xtol but have D3200 in both 120 and 35mm to develop. I did a search and a number of users seem to have used this combination but tantilisingly haven't given times, temps etc.

It looks like 6.5 mins for EI1600 and 7.5 mins for EI3200, both as stock on the Ilford site but nothing on the Kodak site. The MDC seems to quote the Ilford times which might reinforce the correctness of the times if this represents actual users' times but adds nothing if it simply quotes Ilford times.

Any users out there who'd care to quote their times, temp, dilutions etc

Shadows will dump if you underexpose this film. You can push develop highlights but nothing below zone vi will increase in density. Also, consider that low light scenes almost always have considerable brightness range which warrants a contraction in development - higher dilutions, less agitation is the way to go.

Not 1:1, but stock, 74F for 11 min, exposed at 1000, got nice gradation. still working with this film/developer.

Thanks. Interesting that this is considerably more time than Ilford's recommendation of 6.5 mins at only 68F and at a higher speed of EI1600. I have been able to do a little more research and everything I have found points to the Ilford stock times being too short which is what others have said about D3200 with DDX. The good rule of thumb being to develop for the time given for the next speed up.

It is beginning to point to the Kodak PT3200 times for Xtol being closer to what's needed for D3200.

Looking this thread up as I've just processed a roll of Delta 3200 (35mm) in XTOL stock for 8 minutes @ 20ºC (Jobo). Negs look a bit thin and suspect a longer time would be better (perhaps 9-10 minutes).

What speed, Tom? I have the time for HP5+ in stock Xtol at 7.5 mins @EI 200 so 8 mins for D3200 sounds as if it would be quite a bit short .Thanks

The speed was 3200 EI. I have a bit of slightly out of date '120 format' Delta 3200 so ran another roll around the house earlier and processed for 10 minutes @ 20ºC XTOL stock. This looks like a much more promising time, although I was spot metering etc. rather than relying on a built-in centre weighted meter so not a completely scientific comparison.

While this is 2.5 mins more than that required for the HP5+ 400 film @200 and I am glad that the negs are better, an extra 2.5 mins for a film that is at least 3 stops faster than the time for HP5+@200 still sounds on the short side. OK I am comparing apples and pears to an extent but I just had a look for my times I used for D3200 @1250, admittedly at 1+1, and it is 19 mins. I note that the MDC times for D3200 at 3200 and Xtol stock seem somewhat inconsistent and very low

It would be interesting to see photos of the negs at 10 mins and to know what kind of contrast those negs need to be printed at.

Perhaps it is more straightforward to process Delta 3200 in DD-X? It isn't really a film I have much experience with.

Yes, it isn't surprising that Ilford give a full range of speeds for D3200 in their own developers of Microphen and DDX so more straightforward in that respect. There is often a problem of getting the range of info needed when the film belongs to X but the developer to Y. I found DDX to be fine but I don't think I used it at 3200, only at 1600. I have some Microphen but have yet to use it.

On a site called FADU for what it is worth and if I recall correctly, one member there found that in a series of tests on D3200 with Ilford developers that only Microphen delivered box speed with D3200 so concluded that this was the stuff to use if shooting at 3200.

In my case I have found Xtol to be fine at 1250 and I have times for 1600 but cannot recall if I have used it at that but think I have in the past and it was fine. At 3200 I cannot say and unfortunately it would seem we have no others that can say either.

I remain very sceptical about the MDC times for Xtol at 3200

I suspect XTOL is probably more suited to working with D3200 at 1600 EI. In 90% of cases I've been fine with "pushing" HP5 / TMY-2 / DELTA 400 et al to '800', which XTOL does a great job with.

Tom I found an unused roll of 35mm D3200 and I am tempted to try it at 3200 in Microphen to see how it comes out. I suspect it will be a lot more grainy that D3200 @1600 in Xtol and I am not a lover of grain but it might be worth a go just to see for myself what the prints at 5x7ins will look like.

From browsing online I managed to figure out a time of 11 minutes 30 seconds @ 24ºC in the Jobo. XTOL 1+1. Delta 3200 (1600 EI) I haven't tried this yet however. This development time feels more in line with my experience. e.g 7 minutes @ 24ºC for TMY-2 (400 EI) etc.
