I emailed Simon on this and he mentioned Ilford will make a decision on it at the end of the year. But another on another site said he's heard its not going ahead when he emailed on it. I was on the Ilford website and emailed the link on that site for info. A Stephen replied and said he recently asked on this and got a reply back from Ilford HQ that this film is not going ahead. I decided to email Simon back with this new info and got no reply. I know he is on this site, so if you read this Simon fill us in. Is Delta 25 official off the table or have these people been mis-informed?

I think if he told you in the first mail, that the matter will be decided in the end of the year, what else you want to know?
It seems a decision will be made at the end of the year!

Simon is very accurate on his info!

Cheers

André

While an innovative new film would be great, just getting Pan-F+ in sheet sizes would be a welcome move.

Hi All,

Mr.Hicks is very well informed ( as he should be ) I have always said its on the list of 'would like to make products' it is not yet a defined 'PROJECT' no decision till year end on whether its elevated to that :

I always read Mr.Goldfarbs posts with interest...but I think I have already mentioned the reasons why PAN F + is not available in sheet, we could not use one of the sheet film bases we currently use ( never could ) for a PAN F + emulsion to be coated onto, therefore we would need to have a special one made and the volume we would sell could never use the base volume we would have to buy within its coating window
( you have only a certain shelf life before having to coat the base ).

It would have been a nice product to have, and certainly we would have sold some and PAN F+ has lots of loyal users..but in this case its definitely not a product we would ever make...sorry

Regards

Thanks for your reply, Simon. I must have missed that explanation in the past.

"It's more difficult than we originally thought."

I find it funny that there are so many slow films that have been made in the past and even some micro films. Have we in these times forgotten how to make a slow film, or is the Delta technology not adaptable to slow ASA/ ISO films? Or is it because its to be a ground breaking emulsion that goes into unknown territory?

Many emulsions of the past contained ingredients that can no longer be used due to envirionmental concerns. Add to that, with changes in basic materials like gelatin, you'd almost have to redevelop even an old emulsion like, say, Panatomic-X (if you just followed the last working formula, you'd get a film, but no idea what the speed would be until after it was coated, cut, and tested). Then the fact that *no company* has previously sold a designer-grain film slower than ISO 100.

"It's more difficult than we originally thought" probably means exactly that -- they ran into a snag of some sort, maybe as simple as getting a delta grain to grow small enough for ISO 25; maybe as complex as having to start over to match the response curve with the different sensitizing dyes (or lack thereof) in the slower emulsion. Doesn't mean they won't go ahead -- means they have to factor in the extra costs of developing the emulsion when they make the decision.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of slow films, and in any case I can get all the slow film I'm likely to want (J&C sells three different microfilm stocks in 35mm cassettes now -- four, if you count Gigabit -- though no one offers them in 120). I'm not even a significant Ilford user, because my budget pretty much necessitates using the cheapest film I can find (which, fortunately, is still quite good stuff). I think it's very encouraging just to have Ilford considering developing and producing a new product in this market -- even if it doesn't fly, they've pretty well demonstrated they're listening to their customers and trying to make what we want to buy.

Mr.Qualls is correct, as he usually is, it would be a complete redesign ( a new film always is ) we obviously knew that, but it has to be a good film with clear advantages over the 100...not as easy as it looks.

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Update on this emulsion. Its a shame they decided to not pursue it, but if it means chopping Pan F, I'll stick with Pan F.
