Does anyone know if there is a way to decipher the code on a box of Ilford paper? Is it just an emulsion number, or does it also tell you the date and place of manufacture?

The codes are not straightforward, and have changed several times over Ilford's history.

Your best bet is to contact Harman Technical Services via their website, giving them the codes you want to know about.

Or you could try PMing them here.

That tells me the date of manufacture, i.e., the first two digits (38) mean a manufacture date of 02/2016. Thanks.

You're welcome.

It's a cycle of 99 numbers (01-99) corresponding to 99 months.
A new cycle (01) started on January 2013.

So if you end up with a box numbered "35" it's either factory-fresh (Nov. 2016) or it was manufactured in Aug. 2007 ;-)
