Noted documentary photographer Debbie Fleming Cafferywhose work can be found in the collections of MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Whitney, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Pariswill be at Project Basho this Friday, December 4th at 7 pm to discuss her work as part of our ongoing Lecture Series. In addition to the lecture on Friday, she will be signing her book "The Spirit & The Flesh."
Project Basho is incredibly excited to have Ms. Caffery here for this fantastic opportunity. During her stay here, she will be jurying ONWARD '10 in addition to leading her workshop on documentary portraiture that will take place this weekend, December 5th and 6th. The class is almost full so hurry to grab the last remaining slot. Both the workshop and lecture are rare and wonderful opportunities to work and speak with Ms. Caffery, as she spends most of her time traveling the world and working from her home in the Southwest.
Ms. Caffery is well-known for decades of work documenting bayou communities and, more recently, post-Katrina Louisiana. Her work offers an indepth look at places, people and eveyday struggles. "The Spirit & The Flesh" is her newest book and includes work created while living and working in Mexico. Ms. Caffery has been photographing in Mexico since 1990 but in 2005 she received a Guggenheim Fellowship that allowed her to return to the small town in northeasern Mexico and further develop a body of work involving a brothel run from the local cantina.
