And then there's all those death daguerreotypes. There was a great one on display at the Nelson-Atkins museum of art in KC that had a squirrel in a coffin. Supposedly it was a parody on the practice. Very bizarre indeed
Well, the post-mortem daguerreotypes and other photo types isn't all that bizarre when you think about it - often times families were separated by distances that could not be traversed in a timely fashion, so they hired a photographer to take a picture of the deceased to send to the relatives who couldn't attend the service. This was especially true of infant post-mortem photos because sometimes it was the only way the extended family could see the child.
