Is there a simple fix for when the R2400 reaches its dreaded 'maximum number of prints' limit?
Or should I recycle it and get something else? I don't have time to delve into it head first and spend days on fixing it.
I'd look for something new. My R2400 began to fade over a year ago and I found a R3800 to replace it. My easier to work with. I understand the newer R3880 is even better.

If the issue is that the internal waste ink pads have become saturated, there is a simple and effective fix: reroute the waste ink tubes to an external plastic bottle and reset the waste ink counter using software you can find on the web. This will take you 30 minutes, maybe less. I used some aquarium tubing and a 4oz Nalgene bottle, so I didn't even have to buy any parts.
