Hello,

Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't find a clear answer.

I have recently picked up a de vere 504 and I've noticed that you can purchase both flat and extended / recessed lens boards.

Can someone please explain in which scenario's you'd use them?

Thank you.

Hi Paul, as far as I know the normal recessed lens carrier is for 50mm lenses and the flat carrier is for focal lengths over 60mm.
There is also deep recessed lens carrier designed for shorter focal lengths ( like the 40mm wide angle ).
Remember, the shorter the focal length, the nearer it has to be to the film plane !

The 3" deep board is more for the 5108 for 60mm and shorter focal lengths - the 1" deep board is fine for the 504 and a 40-50mm etc. The deep board is a bit of a pain to change lens settings on, so only use it if necessary. The extended boards are really more for 300mm's etc on the 5108, copying applications, shuttered lenses etc.

I'd suggest getting a 1" recessed L39 thread (1972), a flat L39 board (1973) and if you need it, a flat 50mm x 0.75mm board (1974). Obviously, you may want to get multiples thereof.

But you have to remember a 40mm lens won't focus if it's installed on a 1" deep carrier. It has to be very close to the film plane.

John S

The 40mm WA-Componon seems to focus fine on the regular recessed board on both generations of 504 - the 3" deep board is really meant for 28 or 35mm on the 504.
