I've purchased a few old leather jackets that had that cig smell. Placing them in a plastic bag for about 30 minutes with an ozone generator solved the problem.

I spent half an hour last night wiping it down with alcohol pads. Each pad became dark (soiled) as I rubbed, and after about 10 pads, the smell was reduced, but not gone. I have to go buy some baking soda, so that I can store it in a box (or bag or something) with baking soda for a couple days. No access to an O.G. and I really don't want to buy such a thing. As an aside, I sold my GS-1 body and I went to wrap it up and grabbed a piece of the bubble rap that was used in my Hassy box, and the minute I grabbed it I could smell the smoke on it! I tossed it aside lest the new owner of MY camera gets a smokey unit!

you can get charcoal from a pet store... its used in fishtank filters. bake it for an hour at 200f deg to desicate n activate it.

Sounds like you enacted a 50% (or more) cure. That brown stain was likely a mix of nicotine/tar and just plain old grime from handling. I'd just let air take care of the rest.

The packaging story... I was laughing, not at you but with you... that happened to me too once... I bought a product from a guy who even said in his ads that he was a smoker and the product would stink. Well, the product was glass so it didn't stink but everything else did... but I didn't need it right away so put it in a drawer... in the original packaging. Much later when I opened the drawer I learned how wrong I was.

Possibly, but I doubt this would work nearly as well as activated charcoal (or at least the powdered form of it). Just be very careful handling it near the camera, as the stuff is so incredibly fine and can get everywhere.

Heavily smoked cameras really do stink don't they.
I have found that generous doses of strong summer sunlight and fresh air will cure that odour if given time.
Of course this won't remove the nicotine grunge and some cleaning may still be needed.

best thing to try is putting it into a large box or cupboard together with an open tray filled with baking soda and leave it there for a week or two.

Baking soda for a couple of days will do the trick. Our kid's car seat had an accident with the his stomach contents, you couldn't get anywhere near it from the smell but two days later the smell went completely. Just make sure it doesn't end up in the camera.
